We often start with good intentions to make purposeful change in our lives, yet find that we abandon our journey. The personal resources available to us can impact our choice to leave our journey because we feel we cannot address our challenges. We lose our focus on what our life will be like once we achieve our goal or don’t receive feedback journey is worthwhile. We lose our opportunity! Research highlights the value of having a coach to support you in making purposeful change. Choosing a coach to act as your companion can be the difference between making it or abandoning your purposeful change journey. A good coach is positive, enthusiastic, supportive, trusting, focused, goal-oriented, knowledgeable, observant, respectful, patient, empathetic (not sympathetic) and a clear communicator; qualities demonstrated by many. These characteristics need to be honed through training and ongoing supervision to ensure the coach is competent to support people manage the tensions associated with personal change and maintain the objective perspective needed to help another during the tense conversations that are characteristic of coaching.
